Old Testament

If serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day who you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.

Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they don’t sow or reap or store away in barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you much more valuable than they are? Who of you by worrying can add a single inch to his height?
 
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They don't labour or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and is thrown into the fire tomorrow, won’t he clothe you much more, you of little faith? So don’t worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But first seek his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So don’t worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
 

Matthew 6:25–34

 

Don’t judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
 

Matthew 7:1–6

New Testament – Epistles

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
 

Romans 5:7–8

 

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but don't have love, I'm only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but don't have love, I gain nothing.
 
Love is patient, love is kind. It doesn't envy, it doesn't boast, it isn't proud. It isn't rude, it isn't self-seeking, it's not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
 
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they'll cease; where there are tongues, they'll be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see only a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
 
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
 

1 Corinthians 13

 

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Don't be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
 
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things... And the God of peace will be with you.

This text was taken from the New International Version and modified into the way I read it off the page. Heresy, maybe, but it's the way I speak to God – in modern vernacular English...
